Gunstar Heroes (Sega Game Gear review)

Developer: M2
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1995

Gunstar Heroes is a run 'n' gun title that was originally released on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive in 1993.

+ The developers pulled off an impossible port and it's spectacular how much it plays and feels like the 16-bit version.

+ Includes most of the content from the original while omitting the Dice Palace which previously bogged down the action.

+ Being able to tackle the first three stages in any order allows less skilled gamers to see more of what's available.

+ The option to choose your starting weapon is terrific and combining two together leads to experimentation.

+ Boss fights are fun and the multi-part battles against gigantic opponents is a sight-to-behold on rather modest hardware.

+ Graphics are stunning with an impressive amount of background detail to compliment its smooth animation.

- The egregious amount of sprite flicker, graphical glitching and slowdown can be distracting at times.
