Panzer Dragoon (Sega Saturn review)

Developer: Sega CS, Team Andromeda
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1995

Panzer Dragoon is an on-rails shooter that was later released on Windows PC in 1996.

+ Locking onto several enemies and shooting them down in one fluid motion is extremely effective and hugely satisfying.

+ Frame-rate is rock solid throughout and the graphics feature some terrific texture mapping and lighting effects.

+ Episode 4's narrow corridors are a stark difference to the preceding stages and evoke a claustrophobic atmosphere.

+ Incredible cut-scenes pull you into the otherworldly narrative, and the multi-layered boss fights are entertaining.

- A fair amount of memorisation is required to beat each stage which can dampen the fun until you learn attack patterns.

- Panning the camera in 90° rotations to face enemies while looking at the map and avoiding hazards is tough to master.

- Episode 6 is a real let-down due to the lack of a true boss encounter, and the run-up to the game's conclusion feels rushed.
