Arena: Maze of Death (Sega Game Gear review)

Developer: Eden Entertainment Software
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1995

Arena: Maze of Death is an isometric action game that's exclusive to the Sega Game Gear.

+ Gameplay resembles Doom (1993, MS-DOS) in 2D, as you need to collect coloured key cards and hit switches to advance.

+ Includes a wide range of weapons you can switch between on the fly, giving you plenty of options for tackling tricky sections.

+ Intricate level design and the music (while sparse on included tracks) adds to the intensity of the gritty environments.

- Action is repetitive due to the lack of new ideas introduced as you progress, and getting through all 16 stages can be a slog.

- The lack of an in-game map usually results in you running around aimlessly until you stumble upon the correct waypoint.

- Little reason to battle enemies due to limited ammo and the fact they don't drop any items, so avoiding them is your best bet.

- Defeated enemies have an annoying tendency to respawn, often directly on top of your sprite for a cheap hit.
