Asterix and the Great Rescue (Sega Master System review)

Developer: Core Design
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1994

Asterix and the Great Rescue is a puzzle-platformer that was also released on the Sega Game Gear in 1994.

+ Level design can be fairly intricate at times and its exploratory nature sees you travelling in all directions.

+ Unlike many puzzle games there's no time limit here, so you can explore and figure things out at your own pace.

+ The extra screen real estate over the Game Gear version makes strategy and platforming a more tolerable affair.

- The controls are extremely sensitive and attempting pixel-perfect platforming is nigh-on impossible.

- Obvious delay between pressing the attack button and Asterix performing it, and the collision detection is shoddy.

- Button combinations to activate items and characters are convoluted, and the jump / attack buttons are reversed.

- Gameplay is hampered by severe trial-and-error, yet you're only given three continues to complete your quest.
