Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 (Sega Master System review)

Developer: Taito, I.T.L
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1993

Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 is based on the 1987 Arcade game and was only released in Europe and Brazil.

+ Completely different level design to the original, with more variety in both its backdrops and stage layouts.

+ Levels are broken up into sections (e.g. not constantly scrolling) which gives each area a distinct feeling and challenge.

+ Bonus items scattered around the playfield are a tantalising risk-reward tease for high score chasers.

+ The scoring system is deceptively deep and mastering advanced rainbow attacks can net you huge scores.

+ Hit boxes are a little more consistent than the Sega Mega Drive version (1990), and the difficulty is more forgiving.

- The game engine feels like it's running in perpetual slowdown, and the constant sprite flicker is distracting.

- European version of the game features a severe bug that renders the final world completely unplayable.
