Championship Hockey (Sega Master System review)

Developer: Electronic Arts, Imagitec Design
Publisher: U.S. Gold
Released: 1995

Championship Hockey is a sports game that was also released on the Sega Game Gear in 1995.

+ Has a respectable number of modes and there's 22 teams to choose from that each have unique strengths and weaknesses.

- The frame-rate is incredibly choppy and gameplay usually revolves around trying to spot where the puck is actually located.

- If the game chooses the correct player for you to control that's the exception to the rule, as the mechanic is all but broken.

- Your teammates tussle with each other and opposing players have a weird fascination with skating away from the action.

- Collision detection is a mess, with players that refuse to collect the puck and shots that hit the back of the net being ignored.

- Penalties are seemingly called at random and you can find yourself accused of slashing despite not even pressing a button!

- There's zero crowd noise (even when you score) and the graphics are exceptionally ugly for such a late console release.
