Bubsy in: Fractured Furry Tales (Atari Jaguar review)

Developer: Imagitec Design
Publisher: Atari Corporation
Released: 1994

Bubsy in: Fractured Furry Tales is a platformer that's exclusive to the Atari Jaguar.

+ Levels are huge with many twists and turns, and there's a password option to continue your progress at a later date.

- However, there's no map or clear direction from the stage design, resulting in aimless wandering and backtracking.

- Controls are atrociously unresponsive, and Bubsy constantly feels like he has a weight pulling him backwards.

- Dreadful collision detection (e.g. you'll often fall through platforms) and enemy placement is rage inducing.

- Gameplay seems like it wants to mimic the speed of Sonic (1991, Sega Genesis), but there's too many instant death traps.

- Camera never shows you the best view of the action and you often need to be at the edge of the screen for it to scroll.

- World 1 music sounds out-of-place and evokes a far too serious and downbeat tone for a whimsical platformer.

Championship Hockey (Sega Game Gear review)

Developer: Electronic Arts, Imagitec Design
Publisher: U.S. Gold
Released: 1995

Championship Hockey is a sports game that was also released on the Sega Master System in 1995.

+ Has a respectable number of modes, with a better frame-rate and faster gameplay compared to the console version.

- It's unbelievably difficult to see where the puck is located and by the time you've spotted it the CPU is on a break-away.

- If the game chooses the correct player for you to control that's the exception to the rule, as the mechanic is all but broken.

- Goaltenders seemingly take naps while opposing players inexplicably (and regularly) score from outside the blue line.

- Collision detection is a mess, the camera lags behind the puck, and scoring can be abused by button mashing at the net.

- Penalties are typically called at random and you can find yourself accused of slashing despite not even pressing a button!

- There's zero crowd noise (even when you score) and the graphics are exceptionally ugly with little animation.

Championship Hockey (Sega Master System review)

Developer: Electronic Arts, Imagitec Design
Publisher: U.S. Gold
Released: 1995

Championship Hockey is a sports game that was also released on the Sega Game Gear in 1995.

+ Has a respectable number of modes and there's 22 teams to choose from that each have unique strengths and weaknesses.

- The frame-rate is incredibly choppy and gameplay usually revolves around trying to spot where the puck is actually located.

- If the game chooses the correct player for you to control that's the exception to the rule, as the mechanic is all but broken.

- Your teammates tussle with each other and opposing players have a weird fascination with skating away from the action.

- Collision detection is a mess, with players that refuse to collect the puck and shots that hit the back of the net being ignored.

- Penalties are seemingly called at random and you can find yourself accused of slashing despite not even pressing a button!

- There's zero crowd noise (even when you score) and the graphics are exceptionally ugly for such a late console release.
