The Revenge of Shinobi (Sega Mega Drive / Genesis review)

Developer: Sega R&D 2
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1989

The Revenge of Shinobi is an action game that was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2009.

+ Level design has excellent verticality and inventive stages where jumping into the background / foreground is required.

+ Innovative bosses (especially Round 5's multi-part battle on a train) and there's even cameos from various super-heroes.

+ Great music mixes energetic tunes with downbeat, ominous tracks that dramatically alter the mood of the respective stages.

- The difficulty is sky-high compared to other games in the series, with a ton of perilous death pits and swarming enemies.

- Enemy placement is annoying and their positioning is frequently used to make you rely heavily on trial-and-error.

- There's far too many instances where enemies shoot projectiles from off-screen, giving you barely any time to react.

- Double-jump addition is a terrific idea, but executing it is finicky due to how precise your button commands need to be.
