The Legend of Prince Valiant (NES review)

Developer: Ocean Software
Publisher: Ocean Software
Released: 1992

The Legend of Prince Valiant is an action game that was re-released in the U.S. in 2019 by Piko Interactive LLC.

+ Nice amount of variety in its level design, ranging from Pitfall! (1982, Atari 2600) style areas, to first-person action stages.

+ Story arch prior to each level sets the scene for your upcoming adventure and gets you invested in the objective.

- Too many occasions where taking damage seems more like a formality rather than something to avoid via skillful play.

- Cave levels are infuriating due to the lack of evenly-spread items, leaving you constantly running out of time / energy.

- Stingy timer is a huge pinch-point, as it discourages you from exploring the humongous caves in favour of rushing.

- Whilst the first-person stages have potential, they outstay their welcome by repeating the same gameplay for too long.

- Button commands don't always register, particularly when you've just landed from a jump and wish to do so again.
