OutRun (Sega Mega Drive / Genesis review)

Developer: Hertz
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1991

OutRun is a driving game that was originally released in the Arcade in 1986.

+ The action is blisteringly fast and successfully weaving in-and-out of traffic is always a rewarding experience.

+ 15 beautiful courses available (with superb design) and seeing them all requires multiple play-throughs.

+ Sprite scaling is excellent and is used for both the roadside scenery and weather effects for a non-stop visual treat.

+ Ability to select a difficulty setting in the Options menu means that all skill levels are catered for.

+ The FM music is terrific and the addition of voiceovers adds an Arcade flair to this home console port.

- Gameplay is choppy which makes cornering an anxiety-laden affair and the rolling hills result in blind driving.

- The stage transitions are handled in a jarring fashion and don't subtly fade-in like the 8-bit versions.
