Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe (Sega Game Gear review)

Developer: Aspect, Sega CS
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1992

Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe is an action-adventure game that's exclusive to Sega's 8-bit handheld.

+ Gently guides you in the right direction and never resorts to cryptic clues when signifying where you should go next.

+ Excellent balance of one-on-one fights, side-scrolling stages and town exploration to give the game real depth.

+ Enemies in the one-on-one scenes require unique strategies to defeat which gives each battle a neat puzzle-like element.

+ Being able to gain Special Attacks keeps the adventure feeling fresh and affords you new ways to dispatch enemies.

+ While the game isn't particularly lengthy, passwords are offered at each location to save your progress.

- There's a slight button delay when attacking, and the spotty collision detection often leads to cheap hits.

- Enemy placement can be infuriating, and the ending (where the final boss plays out over a cut-scene) is unsatisfying.
